These are one of my daughters favorite projects to make with me as we prepare our garden for winter.
Birdseed wreaths are not only simple and fun to make, they are a great craft to make with kiddos to help them be involved in your garden. They not only enjoy seeing the birdseed take shape, in return they can watch the birds come feed on them all winter long!
Winter can be rather bleak around here in Northern Utah. Many people don’t think of their gardens in the winter, but by adding a few things, you can add great interest to your garden!
- Wildlife can add winter interest to your yard along with evergreen plants, colored twigs, interesting bark, and berries.
- Birdseed will attract wildlife to your yard and help keep your yard active and interesting this winter.
Birdseed Wreaths:
- This is a super simple project, quick…the longest part is just waiting for the wreaths to dry.
- Great project for kids
- Different molds/shapes can be used to make birdseed wreaths/cakes: heart shaped pan, bundt pan, paper cups etc…a straw or something similar may be used to make a hole in the middle of the wreath
- Hang from a ribbon, nail to a post, stack on a birdseed stacker stand or pole, place in a suet basket, feed to your chickens etc…
- Hopefully you’ll have fun observing lots of different birds enjoying tasty treats this winter in your yard.
Birdseed Wreaths
Coat a donut pan with cooking spray.
In a large mixing bowl, mix together the warm water, gelatin, corn syrup or maple syrup and flour until a thick paste forms. Stir in the bird seed until well blended. Press firmly into the donut pan. (It’s a bit sticky! Coating your hands with cooking spray is super helpful.) There is enough batter to just about fill 2 donut pans, or a single bundt pan. You can even make your own “donut” shape with the rest of the batter on a parchment lined baking sheet.
Let sit at room temperature for 24-48 hrs until dry.
Hang from a thick ribbon (smaller strings or ribbon tend to break the birdseed wreath).

I don’t have regular flour in my house to avoid cross contamination, could I use brown rice flour instead or something else?

I bet you could try an all purpose gluten free flour! You’ll have to let me know how it works out!
