Turfgrass/Lawn 101

Turfgrass 101

Let’s talk Lawns/Turfgrass/Greens.

Mowing the lawn is one of my all time favorite chores! Anyone else a lover of lawn-mowing? 🙋🏻‍♀️ .

Chances are your lawn has enjoyed the rain and gorgeous weather the last few days and may even be ready for a mow.

This means it’s time to pull out your mower & sharpen your mower’s blade.

To keep your lawn healthy keep your grass about 2 1/2 – 3 inches long. This helps to shade the roots, keep moisture from evaporating too quickly and helps to conserve water during our dry hot summers!

Water deeply and infrequently to promote deep root growth.

Frequent mowing helps alleviate damage to lawn. As a rule of thumb, no more than 1/3 of the blade should be removed at one time.

Don’t bag your grass. Leaving your grass clippings can actually help reduce thatch by providing a food source for microbes that then decompose thatch. Grass clippings also return some nitrogen and other nutrients back into the soil.

Feed your lawn. Proper fertilization will help keep your lawn healthy.

Mowing patterns matter. Change your mowing patterns weekly. This helps to avoid ruts in your lawn and compaction. Mow north to south, east to west, and on both diagonals.

These simple steps will have you enjoying a luscious lawn all summer long!
